New Taipei: A Rainy Day Tour at Shifen Waterfall
One of Taiwan’s most famous waterfalls, and dubbed Little Niagara, this scenic waterfall is located in Pingxi District, New Taipei City, Taiwan. Having more than 20 meters (66ft) tall and 40 meters (130ft) wide, Shifen Waterfall (十分大瀑布) is the broadest waterfall in Taiwan. On good weather, like some waterfalls, it creates a rainbow, making it one of the most scenic spots in Taiwan.
After roaming (and disappointed with the weather) in Jiufen Old Street, we traveled going here. It took us about an hour going through the mountainous region of Northeastern New Taipei where you can see the Wufen mountain ridges along the way.
It was almost 4 in the afternoon when we arrived; we came just in time before the entrance closes at 4:30 pm. From the parking area, we trekked for more than 800 meters going to the falls. It’s rainy and we’re almost drenched; luckily we bought NT$50 raincoats from Yehliu and we used them here. However, taking a decent photo proved grueling.
Along the trail, there are many scenic spots that you can see like the Sihguang pond, which you would appreciate more when viewed from the Shiguangtan Suspension Bridge.
You will also be passing by Yanjindong Falls, which you can view much better from under Guanpo Suspension Bridge and Pingxi Rail Bridge. Yanjindong Waterfall is 6 meters tall and 6 meters wide, categorized as an erosion waterfall. It is also called Glasses Holes Waterfall for its resemblance to a glass when viewed from the bridge.
Even amidst the light drizzle, we were still awed by the spectacle. After more than 15 minutes of walking under the rain in a well-paved road, we reached the Shifen Waterfall scenic area. Even with the dusk approaching under the rain, the area never fails to attract visitors; there are groups of schoolchildren having an educational field trip here. There are picnic areas and some stalls selling foods and souvenirs at this spot.
The first view deck near the falls will be the first one to grab your attention. It is where you can witness the power of the falling water. Because of the rains, the flowing waters were brownish. Nevertheless, its beauty is still amazing.
To further appreciate its beauty, we went to the lower viewing deck. It is well paved and has handrails, making the descent safe even during rains.
Under the rain, we still tried to peek the spectacle with our cameras. Taking photos is a bit challenging, but yet is a wonderful souvenir. While observing it, it’s not the Niagara falls that came to our mind, but the Tinuy-An Falls in Bislig. You can hear the sound of the roaring water that symbolizes the power of the falls.
We just stayed here for several minutes when the P.A. system (in Mandarin and English) announced that we have to depart. Swimming is not allowed, you are only allowed to watch. But yet, we bathed in the rain. Hopefully the next time we visit here, the weather would go to our favor. 🙂
From Taipei Main Station, take a northbound train (except Keelung-bound trains) towards Ruifang Station. Transfer to the Pingxi Line (平溪線) and purchase a One Day Ticket for the Pingxi Line, NT$52.
Not far from here is the Shifen Old Street, famous for sky lanterns in Pingxi District. While going through the trail towards the falls, you can see some sky lanterns falling to the river and trees. They are pleasant to see when they are up to the sky, but they spoil the view when scattered on the trees.
- Bring your own food, foods sold here are a bit expensive.
- Bring drinking water. It’s rainy when we arrived here, but during sunny weather, there is no shade.
- During rainy weather, bring raincoat so you can enjoy it even with uncooperative weather.
- It has a large parking lot so you can bring your own vehicle.
